Toronto: The 72-Hour Weekend

This weekend, join Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes for an epic love-in, and laugh along with Jay Martin.

Long weekends: rare, beautiful, still too short.

Be-Stills My Beating Heart, Thursday, 8:30 p.m.
Montreal’s The Stills bring their soaring, head-bopping pop masterpieces to the Horseshoe. 370 Queen St. W., $20.

Look: Sharpe! Friday, 8 p.m.
Take part in an epic, joyful, tripped-out love-in when Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes (pictured above) bring their good vibrations to the Phoenix. 410 Sherbourne St., $19.

Hot! Hot! Hot! Saturday, 10 a.m.
The wild colours! The flamboyant costumes! And so much dancing! Let the jubilant spectacle of the Caribana Parade dazzle you as it makes its way from Exhibition Place and moves west along Lakeshore Boulevard. Seats $20, standing is free.

The Bicycle Thief, Saturday, 2:30 p.m.
Relieve the painful memories of Toronto’s most notorious bike-nabber as author Richard Poplack and illustrator Nick Marinkovich discuss their graphic novel Kenk: A Graphic Portrait. Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St., free.

Island Laughs, Saturday, 9 p.m.
Jay Martin unloads Jamaican comedy flavour spicier than jerk chicken at the Jam Dun Comedy Jam as part of Harbourfront Centre’s Island Soul festival. 235 Queens Quay W., free.

Distillery Dish, Sunday, 7 p.m.
From its soaring pine ceilings to the bare concrete floor (and every exposed brick in between), Archeo is at home in the Distillery District. Saddle up to the reclaimed timber bar, or retreat to the secluded patio to enjoy a fresh pint from nearby Mill Street Brewery. Indulge in homemade orecchiette pasta with creamy cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan sauce –but save room for the cocoa-dusted tiramisu. Mains $12 – $25, 55 Mill St., 416-815-9898.

These columns need a reboot. Music seems to get more attention over everything else. And Archeo? Come on, there is nothing special about that space for those of us who have been to the Distillery any more than 2 times. I thought this column advises on the undiscovered and the stylish hip?
