The Great Shaving Cream Experiment

With trusty razor in hand, our intrepid writer tested five different shaving creams for a week each. Here’s what he discovered.

We’ve evolved well beyond the days when a bar of soap could be considered proper shaving cream. But how great is the difference between a $3 cream and $30 “formula”? And do we really need more ginseng? With his trusty Gillette Mach 3 in hand, writer Vaughn Stafford Gray tested five popular products for five days each. Here are our findings.

The Art of Shaving Starter Kit ($60)
This four-step kit – including pre-shave oil, shaving cream, a foaming brush and after-shave balm – makes a morning quickie impossible. But it’s a small price for a nick-free, perfectly cool face. At Holt Renfrew, various locations.

Life Brand Sensitive Skin Shaving Foam ($2.49)
The razor drags against the skin, leaving the face stiff, exhausted and somewhat resembling a Braille version of a subway map. At Shoppers Drug Mart, various locations.

Kiehl’s “Close-Shavers” Shaving Formula #31-O ($26.50)
This rinsable oil softens the beard, allowing the blade to glide effortlessly. The translucent formula is perfect for sculpting that ’stache, and the natural botanicals leave the face moisturized and invigorated. At Kiehl’s, various locations.

Zirh Shave Cream ($27)
The aloe, ginseng and glycerin non-foaming combo creates a superior shave, leaving skin feeling firm. At Shoppers Drug Mart, various locations

Mont Source Unique Shave Solution ($29.95)
With just a few drops, this heavenly oil softens hair follicles at the root, resulting in a smooth, effective shave. After shaving, just pat dry and go. Available at montsource.com.

I know, Water is a lousy sponsor, but I have not used cream in over a decade. Hot water streaming from the shower acts like a perfect lubricant. It softens my beard, my skin, and is always there rinsing the blade clean. Without soap, there is no razor burn, or rash. oh, and it’s cheap, cheap, cheap…

Try Proraso. It’s Italian and available now at Shopper’s. It’s the best shaving soap I’ve found for sensitive skin. You have to put it on with a brush. Badger brushes are great, but really expensive, so any shaving brush will really do (I like Kent). Of course the best shave is one that you get at the barbershop.
