Q: Why do some sheet sets cost $50 while other lines charge $120 for just a pillow case?
A: Have you ever felt the difference between a $50 set and a $120 pillow case? They are definitely not the same.
While a set of bedsheets performs the same function — covers your mattress, your pillows and you — regardless of how much you paid for it, not all linens are created equal. As with anything, you get what you pay for — the more you spend, the better quality you get.
First, let’s talk about thread count, which most people look to as the main indicator of linen quality. The higher the thread count, the more threads are woven into each square inch, usually resulting in a softer feel and a more durable fabric (i.e. they’ll last longer). Most linens are about 150 thread count, while good quality sets tend to sit in the range of 180–500. Beware, though: Some manufacturers will count each ply as a thread; for example, if a single thread is made of two thinner threads spun together, they count it as two, not one. What does this mean? That 400 thread count sheet could actually be a two-ply 200 count, which will feel nicer than a 150 thread count but rougher than a true 400.
Fibre content also affects the price point. Quality linens are usually made of cotton; cheaper sets are likely to be either polyester or a poly-cotton blend. But even 100 percent cottons are not all created equal: higher-quality cotton has longer individual fibres, or staples, which, spun together, make up a stronger thread. The best cotton is Egyptian, but beware the label: It might say Egyptian all over the package but contain a mere five percent, with lower-quality fibres comprising the balance.
As well, don’t forget how the sheets are made. Pay less and you may find that the stitching comes undone prematurely.
Ultimately, the best way to know whether you’re getting a good set is by touching it. Better linens tend to feel softer and nicer. Choose what you like and spend within your budget, but considering spending a bit more — the “30% of your life is spent here” logic, the common sense foundation of mattress sales, is just as applicable here.
